The order of a wedding invitation

  1. The hosts: you, your families, or your parents.
  2. The request line: “request the pleasure of your company”, “invite you to celebrate”.
  3. Your names.
  4. Date and time, written out for a formal tone (“Saturday, the twelfth of June”).
  5. The venue and city.
  6. The reception line.
  7. RSVP and anything practical (dress code, website, gift list).

“The honor of your presence” is traditionally used for a ceremony in a place of worship; “the pleasure of your company” for everything else.

Questions

How do you write the date on a formal wedding invitation?

Spell it out: “Saturday, the twelfth of June, two thousand twenty-seven, at four o’clock in the afternoon”. Casual invitations can use numbers.

Should both names be in full?

On a formal invitation, yes: first, middle (optional) and last names. Casual invitations often use first names only.

Is “adults only” rude to write?

Not when it’s said kindly and clearly. Many couples write it on the invitation and address it by name to the guests who are invited, so nobody is surprised.

Where does the RSVP deadline go?

At the end, after the venue and reception lines. On a digital invitation it sits right above the reply button.
